How We Score

Our Ranking Methodology

How the ten operators on the Quark Expeditions Reviews 2026 ranking are scored, weighted, and ordered — and what that order does and doesn't mean.

Methodology last revised: August 2026. Reviewed and updated at least twice a year, or sooner if fleet, pricing or safety-membership data changes materially for a listed operator.

Important framing

The order on our main ranking reflects an aggregated industry overview built from public sources as of July 2026. It is not the only possible objective methodology — a publication weighting price, itinerary variety, or fleet size differently could reasonably order these ten operators differently. We publish our weights below so readers can judge that for themselves.

Eight scoring categories

Every operator is scored against the same eight categories, using the same public data sources, regardless of size, price tier, or brand recognition.

  • Fleet & ice class — vessel ice classification, age, and refurbishment history.
  • Landing style — whether the operator lands its full complement of guests at once, or in rotated groups, based on passenger count relative to the ~100-ashore guideline most operators work within.
  • Safety & membership — active membership in IAATO and/or AECO, and how long that membership has been held.
  • Expedition team expertise — the presence and disclosed size of a dedicated naturalist/scientist expedition staff, separate from hotel crew.
  • Guest review aggregation — aggregated sentiment from Google Reviews, TripAdvisor and Cruise Critic, weighted toward review volume and recency (see below).
  • Price transparency — how clearly an operator's public rate sheet discloses what's included versus billed as an add-on.
  • Sustainability practices — disclosed environmental programs and whether they include measurable commitments, not just a mission statement.
  • Itinerary flexibility — breadth of regions and departure dates offered within the polar season.

How we aggregate reviews

We do not run our own passenger surveys. Instead, we read publicly available reviews on Google Reviews, TripAdvisor and Cruise Critic for each operator, and summarize recurring themes — what's repeatedly praised, what's repeatedly criticized — rather than quoting any single review. We apply a minimum aggregate rating threshold of 4 out of 5 for a review set to be featured in full on an operator's profile; where an operator's public sentiment is more mixed, we say so explicitly rather than rounding up. Full sourcing detail is in our sources & fact-checking policy.

Why the order isn't a strict league table

Two operators can score similarly on our eight criteria while differing sharply on things this methodology doesn't weigh — regional focus, group size preference, or a specific type of cabin. We rank by aggregate score, but we write every operator profile so a reader can override that order based on what actually matters to their trip.

Updates and corrections

When a material fact changes — a new ship enters service, a safety-body membership lapses, a significant incident occurs — we update the relevant operator profile and note the revision date at the top of this page. See our editorial policy for how corrections are handled, and our submit a company page if you believe an operator is missing.
